Lyrics
Bha sneachda na chuibhrig air ìseal is àrd,
Am broinn an taigh-òsda na seòmraichean làn;
Bha Màiri is Iòsaph air tòir àite tàimh
Am Bethlehem fhuadain ’s an Uair ann mu thràth
O càit an robh fasgadh bhon chas-shileadh fhuar
Dhan òigh a bha giùlan Fear-saoraidh an t-sluaigh?
Ach threòraicheadh dìreach is cinnteach an ceum
Dhan fhàrdaich a b’ìsle san tìr ud gu lèir.
O, Seall E na shìneadh gu rìomhadh na chòir;
O, Seall air a Mhàthair ga thàladh le deòin,
’S na h-ainglean a’ fàilteachadh pàisde na h-Oigh -
Bidh’n oidhche seo àraid an cànan ’s an ceòl.
Bha ceòl air a’ ghaoith agus shoillsich an Reul
Mun cuairt air na cìobairean, ’s shìn iad an ceum:
’S an uamha nan ainmhidhean thairg iad an gaol
Dhan naoidhean aig Màiri, Rìgh-phàisde chlann-daoin’!
Lyrics Translated
The snow lay as a blanket on high and on low,
Inside the inn the rooms were all full;
Mar and Joseph seeking a place to rest
In alien Bethlehem, the time having come.
Oh, where was the shelter from the cold downpour
For the virgin bearing the Saviour of mankind?
But their steps were guided direct and sure
To the humblest dwelling in all of that land.
Oh, see him lying without any kind of pomp;
Oh, look at his mother lulling him willingly
And the angels welcoming the Virgin’s child –
This night will be famed in words and in music.
There was music on the breeze and the star shone
All round the shepherds and they lengthened their stride:
In the cave of the beasts they offered their love
To Mary’s baby, mankind’s Infant-king!
